Our

Projects

We join forces with our partners in collaborative projects that educate the community about their rights, build our shared power to make change, and amplify the impact of our legal action.

ALTERNATIVE FIRST RESPONSE COALITION

Call

It Out

The Call It Out racism register is a simple and secure way for people to report incidents of racism and discrimination toward First Nations Peoples. By calling out racism, you can help tell the true story of racism in this country.

We joined with Larissa Behrendt, Jumbunna Institute Director and National Justice Project Board member, to launch Call It Out in 2022.

Projects

Copwatch

You can use CopWatch to educate yourself about your rights when filming police interactions with the community. Our groundbreaking app, website and training programme is designed to keep you safe and hold police accountable.

Dunghutti, Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung activist Lizzie Jarrett presented to a CopWatch training session in Minto (NSW) in March 2023.

Projects

TECH4JUSTICE

Tech4Justice helps you access information and services to lodge a formal complaint against discrimination, injustice or harm. By sharing your experience and making an official complaint, you are helping to identify and respond to issues for the benefit of all community members.

After a brutal assault by NSW Police against a young First Nations man in Surry Hills in June 2020, our Principal Solicitor, George Newhouse (third from left), took a knee in solidarity with our clients.

PARTNERSHIP FOR

JUSTICE IN HEALTH

The Partnership for Justice in Health (P4JH) is an alliance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academics, legal experts, and organisations committed to working together to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and justice outcomes through addressing racism.

We stood with our client, Leetona Dungay, the mother of David Dungay Jnr, to announce a complaint to the United Nations against the government’s failure to take action against First Nations deaths in custody.

ABORIGINAL PATIENT

ADVOCACY TRAINING

We have partnered with the Aboriginal Health Council of WA and the Health Consumers’ Council to develop training for community members and professionals to advocate with Aboriginal people to protect their rights and wellbeing in the health system.

Projects

lawhack

Our flagship event brings the legal community together to develop innovative solutions to issues of systemic injustice. Our first hackathon, LawHack 2021 looked at advocacy and legal strategies for disability justice, while LawHack 2023 seeks to protect the rights of First Nations children in youth detention and out-of-home-care.

We stood with our client, Leetona Dungay, the mother of David Dungay Jnr, to announce a complaint to the United Nations against the government’s failure to take action against First Nations deaths in custody.

ALTERNATIVE

FIRST RESPONDERS

We are leading a national campaign to advocate for appropriate first responders instead of police attending to people in a health or social crisis, especially those related to mental health.
Police do not have the training, skills, or experience to serve this role.

Instead of receiving psychosocial care, many people in crisis are treated with violence and arrested by police. Our leadership on this issue draws on our experience in cases like to coronial inquest into the death of Todd McKenzie, who was fatally shot by NSW police at his home while experiencing a psychotic episode on 31 July 2019.
