Help our fight for fair healthcare

Everyone deserves effective and appropriate medical care. Everyone deserves culturally safe and dignified healthcare, free of discrimination.

The National Justice Project walks with our courageous clients in seeking justice for the harms they have experienced from racial bias in hospitals, unacceptable treatment in prisons and neglect in detention. Our clients know through lived experience that First Nations people, refugees and asylum seekers continue to be treated as second-class citizens across Australia.

This end of financial year, we are shining the spotlight on the critical issue of discrimination in healthcare in a range of settings and how we will continue fighting for systemic change.

There is no healing without justice, and justice will only be served when an Aboriginal person can walk into a hospital in this country without being scared that they might never walk out.

Rick Hampson Snr on the inquest into his son’s death which has led to statewide health policy reform.

Institutional racism in hospitals and health services is a significant contributor to the gap in life expectancy for Indigenous people, compared to non-Indigenous people.

The National Justice Project has supported a number of families seeking justice for the unacceptable treatment provided to their loved ones in hospitals, including the family of Kamilaroi/Dunghutti man Ricky ‘Dougie’ Hampson. Dougie tragically passed away in 2021 after a misdiagnosis in a NSW public hospital and a coroner found his death was preventable. The coroner said recommendations from this pivotal inquest should help drive cultural safety, recognition and improvement in the healthcare system.

No one should seek critical medical help and die as a result of the colour of their skin.

We need your support to help other individuals and families secure justice and accountability for their loved ones. You can help us continue the fight for systemic change and ensure that everyone receives the dignity and access to essential healthcare they deserve.
