Happy International Women’s Day!

The National Justice Project is very proud of the incredible women on our team who make up 80% of our staff.

Our all-female, powerhouse of an Executive Team leads our organisation with absolute flair and diligence.

On International Women’s Day 2024 , we have a very exciting announcement.

Congratulations to our newly appointed Principal Solicitors, Ashleigh Buckett and Emma Hearne!💐

With only 35% of partners and principals in NSW law firms being female, Ashleigh and Emma are making waves in the industry.

“I’m really excited for the National Justice Project to move into the climate justice space – the climate crisis is the greatest human rights challenge of our generation and it’s something our team cares deeply about.” – Ashleigh

Since 2018, Ashleigh has worked with the National Justice Project on major human rights cases, including securing urgent medical care for refugees detained in offshore immigration detention. She currently represents clients including Leetona Dungay, who has lodged a complaint with the United Nations against the Australian Government over her son David Dungay’s death in prison custody. Ashleigh will lead the National Justice Project’s expansion into climate justice work, taking on strategic legal cases to tackle the climate crisis.

“I am proud to have led our team in refugee justice cases that we have been working on for six years., These cases began when the clients were on Nauru, working to go to court to obtain, quite literally, life-saving treatment, to many long years of legal battles. We’re finally seeing closure for some of our  clients.”  – Emma

Emma joined us in 2017, working on a large cohort of cases to ensure asylum seekers and refugees held in Australia’s offshore detention centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea could access life-saving medical treatment. This strategic litigation helped spark the #kidsoffnauru campaign. This resulted in all children being removed from Nauru offshore detention centre by the end of 2018, and the subsequent ‘Medevac Bill’.

We could not be prouder to have Emma and Ashleigh lead our legal team alongside our outstanding solicitors, paralegals and volunteers.
